Abstract
Effects of rice straw, transparent polyethylene and black polyethylene mulches on Chinese cabbage growth and soil temperature in fall were investigated. Results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. Minimum, mean and maximum soil temperature at 5, 10 and 15cm depth under the surface were always highest in the plot mulched with the transparent PE film and followed by black PE mulch. Those of the rice straw mulch and unmulched plots were almost same each other and lowest.
2. Difference of soil temperature between mulch treatments was big in the earlier growing stage of Chinese cabbage and small in the later.
3. Daily minimum and maximum soil temperature at l0cm soil depth were shown in the highest frequency at 7 o¢¥clock in the morning and at 4 o¢¥clock in the afternoon, regardless the mulch treatments, respectively.
4. Growth and yield of Chinese cabbage were not significantly different between mulch treatments when seeded directly on August 10. But they were significantly different between transparent PE mulch and unmulched plots when transplanted on September 5 and 15 after raising for 25 days in the seed bed.
